Officer Donald Shepard

Officer Donald R. Sheppard - November 12th, 1971

Officer Sheppard made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life for his community in a gun battle with an escaped convict. Following that terrible incident, a park in the town of Highland was dedicated and a monument was erected to honor Officer Sheppard. Maurice Barnes was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole and died while serving his sentence. Officer Sheppard was survived by his wife and three small children.

Officer Donald Sheppard was shot and killed during a traffic stop at 9:50 am on Ridge Road near Highland Street.

Officer Sheppard, while transporting two other officers back from checking on an impounded car, made a traffic stop on a vehicle. The officers were unaware that the driver was a convicted rapist who had escaped from the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City two hours earlier. The suspect opened fire on the officers, killing Officer Sheppard, but was shot and wounded by one of the other officers. The suspect was arrested and sentenced to life in prison, where he died.

Officer Sheppard had served with the Highland Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
 

Officer Robert J Markley

Officer Robert J Markley- March 10th, 1978            

Officer Markley was Killed in the line of duty while directing traffic at  the scene of a Hijacking Kidnapping by a drunk driver. March 10, 1978 2:02 am 8000 block of Indianapolis Blvd (US41)

Officer Robert Markley was struck and killed by a drunken driver while directing traffic at 2:00 am in the 8000 block of Indianapolis Boulevard which was the scene of an officer-involved shooting.
 
 A hijacked truck was being removed from a snow bank when a drunken driver entered the area and struck Officer Markley. The suspect was apprehended, but later was found not guilty of reckless homicide.
 
 Officer Markley had served with the Highland Police Department for four years. He was survived by his wife and infant son.
